Past and Present

The first ski lift went up at Niseko HIRAFU in 1961. From that single moment, something lasting began—shaped by the mountain's deep snowpack, its forgiving terrain, and the particular way the light falls on a January morning. People have been finding their way back here ever since.

Tokyu Land Corporation arrived in 1985. Japan was still finding its relationship with the resort stay—the idea that a mountain could be a place to linger, not just pass through. Tokyu helped build that idea into something real: investing in accommodation, in lift infrastructure, in the conditions for a culture of skiing and staying that would become central to what Niseko is.

Those investments continued. In 2004, Niseko Mountain Resort Grand HIRAFU opened—the direct predecessor of Niseko Tokyu Grand HIRAFU as it stands today.

The story of Niseko is the story of that long collaboration between the Tokyu Land Corporation Group, the land, and the people who call it home.

Twenty-two runs spread across terrain that rewards both the first-timer and the seasoned skier. It is the only area in Niseko United where Mt. Yotei defines the horizon—calm, unmistakable, never far from view.

Below the mountain, HIRAFU village has the feel of something that grew organically rather than was planned: international hotels alongside old lodges, ramen counters next to wine bars, a streetscape that feels natural and unforced.

Attention is gathering around Niseko—from within Japan and far beyond it. Development projects are underway. The summer months are finding their audience. The energy of expansion is real.

What that moment calls for is not simple expansion. It calls for growth that protects what made this place what it is—its culture, relationship with the land, and the local talent and spirit that have always been at Niseko's core. A model of tourism-led regional development that other destinations look to. That is the ambition.

Here at Niseko Tokyu Resort, we are working toward one thing: becoming the world's only year-round shizen resort. A place where people and nature don't simply share the same space, but shape each other. Where guests leave with a feeling they didn't arrive with—something they may not be able to name right away, but will recognize over time.
